Good news, Game of Thrones fans! They've found and cast Prince Oberyn Martell, known as The Red Viper. The lucky actor? None other than Chilean actor Pedro Pascal, who has previously been seen on CBS' The Good Wife, ABC's Red Widow and USA's Graceland.
Pascal's casting was apparently a hard one, as the character has many sides. For those who are unfamiliar with the books, here's what you need to know: The Red Viper is a charming and brash prince of Dorne, which is part of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. His sister Elia was brutally murdered by the Lannister knight Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane (brother to Sandor Clegane, or "The Hound"), when Mad King Aerys was overthrown by Robert Baratheon and the Lannisters. In season four, Oberyn comes to King's Landing to seek revenge.
“This was a tough one,” showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss told Entertainment Weekly about the casting. “The Red Viper is sexy and charming, yet believably dangerous; intensely likable, yet driven by hate. The boys love him, the girls love him, and he loves them all back. Unless your last name is Lannister. We found a fellow who can handle the job description and make it seem effortless. He wasn’t easy to find and he won’t be easy to stop.”
Two other Hispanic actresses have made appearances on Game of Thrones: Oona Chaplin (granddaughter to Charlie Chaplin) who plays Talisa Stark, is Spanish with Chilean heritage and Natalia Tena, who plays Osha, is also of Spanish descent.
