CBS' 'Rob' & 7 Other Movies & TV Shows Where A Latino Married a Non-Latino

On the hit CBS comedy Rob, all hell breaks loose when a white guy (Rob Schneider) gets engaged to a Latina (Claudia Bassols). While Rob is the only show of its kind on the air right now, it isn't the first TV show to tell the story of a Latino married to a non-Latino (remember I Love Lucy?). There have also been several movies that have explored the topic of interracial marriage (both comedies and dramas). Here are 7 movies and TV shows where a Latino married a non-Latino!

EXCLUSIVE: Eugenio Derbez on His New CBS Show ¡Rob!: “It’s Like Meet the Mexicans”

1. Interracial: Fools Rush In

Fools Rush In

Salma Hayek and Matthew Perry, playing a Mexican American photographer and a WASP-y architect spend a night together in Vegas, get pregnant and have a shotgun wedding. That’s just the beginning. Then they meet each other’s families, on one side gun-toting, snake-shooting Mexicans in big hats who decorate her house in bright colors and on the other side, super-starched blancos who never venture beyond white wine. Somehow, they make it work.

2. Interracial: When a Man Loves A Woman

When a Man Loves a Woman

This is a rarity: A movie portraying a marriage between a Latino (Andy Garcia) and a white person (Meg Ryan) that doesn’t spend time exploiting cultural differences for laughs. It’s simply a drama about a man trying to save his wife, and his marriage, from alcoholism. That’s universal.

3. Interracial: Our Family Wedding

Our Family Wedding

Once you get past the concept that a Latina girl (America Ferrera) could ever get engaged without her whole family knowing what her fiancé (Lance Gross) looks like, this comedy delves into how two families, one Latino, one black, deals with coming together for the big day.

4. Interracial: The Other Guys

The Other Guys

Eva Mendes, married to Will Ferrell. Riiiiiiight. But the Latina bombshell and the overgrown elf make it work on this underrated comedy.

5. Interracial: I Love Lucy

I Love Lucy

The first TV show to portray a marriage between a white person and a someone of a different ethnicity and culture, this 1950s classic included culture and accent clashes between Ricky (Desi Arnaz) and Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball).

6. Interracial: American Gangster

American Gangster

He’s the drug lord who introduced heroin to Harlem, she’s the Puerto Rican beauty queen who he picks up (read: buys) at a nightclub, impressing her with his soft side and his fur-wearing lifestyle. This can’t end well, and in this biopic starring Denzel Washington and Lymari Nadal, it doesn’t.

7. Interracial: Nothing Like the Holidays

Nothing Like the Holidays

Oh, Debra Messing. What were you thinking, marrying into a crazy-dysfunctional Latino family (via John Leguizamo) and then agreeing to a family reunion over the holidays? Didn’t you know that your metiche mother-in-law (Elizabeth Peña) was going to push you to give her grandkids? Ay, mi’ja!
