'American Idol' Recap: Matheus Fernandes Sent Home After Solo Night

Several significant cuts were made on last night’s male solo night on American Idol. Our hearts sank a little once Matheus Fernandes was cut from the competition. The 22-year-old singer appeared nervous about performing with a live band, but took the stage anyway and sang Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger.” Before his set, Fernandes mentioned his height challenge and how people bullied him growing up.

After his performance, Mariah Carey criticized his rendition and said it didn’t feel “connected.” However, Nicki Minaj was way harsher (and real). She accused the Idol hopeful about wanting a “pity party” and went on to say, “You don’t have to milk it. Be you, be great, and rest in your talent after today.” Good words of advice.

Devin Velez also rocked the competition! He covered the classic "What a Wonderful World" and left everyone on the panel impressed. "You are born to sing, it's what you do," said Keith Urban. Follorwed by an "Amen" by Randy Jackson.

Luckily, one of our fave contestants Lazaro Arbos did survive the evening. He sang “Edge of Glory” by Lady Gaga and left the judges amazed. “Absolutely beautiful, as always,” said Carey. We couldn’t agree more!
