It was a rough night for the top ten as they covered hits from American Idol’s past winners on last night’s show. While Nicki Minaj decided to arrive fashionably late to the judges panel (a first in Idol history), the show went on without her. Of course, she didn’t disappoint once she hit the stage chewing gum and rocking a hoodie and sunglasses. Classy.
She may have stolen the show for the first half, but the attention was quickly returned to the contestants after female powerhouses Candice Glover and Angie Miller took the mic. Out of the guys, Devin Velez struggled a bit to nail Carrie Underwood's “Temporary Home,” but still got a roaring applause from the audience. However, he didn’t impress Keith Urban. “My feeling is that that wasn’t one of your better performances and for me a wrong song choice,” he said.
While Randy Jackson deemed his performance “too safe,” Minaj was a fan. “You look like a professional. I’m glad you didn’t do the Spanish today because it shows people you are multifaceted. I loved the song with your voice,” she said.
Unfortunately, Lazaro Arbos also received mixed reviews from the judges after his cover of Kelly Clarkson’s “Unbreakable.” The Cuban singer seemed shaky and nervous throughout the performance and the judges took notice as well. When Urban asked him why he picked the song, he said, “I loved the words to that song and its kind of what I’m going through in my life.”
Minaj took to español to get her message across. “Qué paso hoy? A mi no me gustó,” she said before complimenting him on looking like Ricky Ricardo and advising him to be more confident. We hope he takes Nicki’s advice and shines on! We knew she was on the show for a reason.
One of the 10 performers will be sent home on tonight's show, which will also feature performances by Bon Jovi and Phillip Phillips.
Who do you think will get sent home?
