What were Shakira and Ingrid Betancourt doing together in Paris this week? Latina.com has learned that Shakira met with Betancourt and her son, Lorenzo, and conducted a five-hour joint interview with Caracol radio in which she shared her admiration for the Colombian-French politican, who was rescued on July 2 by government security forces from a six-year-long captivity under FARC (the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia). “Ingrid is a spectacular woman with a huge heart and admirable intelligence,” said the singer. “She remains as committed to Colombia now as she was before her kidnapping.”
Shakira also touched on the broader impact that Betancourt’s rescue has had on her country. “More than a symbol of our conflict, Ingrid is the face of hope in Colombia,” said Shakira. “She has injected us with a force and power that keeps us united at this time.”
On July 20, Colombia’s Independence Day, Shakira, Betancourt, and other Colombian notables will participate in separate protest marches in support of the estimated 700 hostages who remain in captivity under FARC rebel forces. Shakira and Carlos Vives will headline a concert at the Colombian border shared with Peru and Brazil, and Betancort will be joined by Juanes for a march in Paris.
