Lupe Ontiveros Added to Online Memorial After Oscar Snub

Sure, Sunday's Academy Awards was filled with enough glitz and glam to make your eyes sore, but it was also a sad moment when Mexican American actress Lupe Ontiveros was missing during the 2012 memorial tribute. The snub resulted in a grassroots campaign that pressured the Academy to include her in their online tribute, which she was also absent from.

Latino recast: Freddy Rodriguez

Cooper may have nailed his role as a man with bipolar disorder, but there’s no doubt that Rodriguez would deliver a gritty and compelling depiction of Pat Solitano. The 38-year-old actor’s role as the restorative artist Federico on HBO’s hit series, Six Feet Under, proved that he could play a man recovering from a crippled marriage and attempting to rebuild his life.

103 Latino Oscar Nominees!

It’s the ultimate prize in Hollywood: the Oscar. Granted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the coveted Academy Award statuettes have been doled out annually since 1929 as an award “of merit for distinctive achievement" in the industry. But it wasn’t until nearly 20 years later that the first Latino earned an Academy Award nomination.

It’s no wonder José Ferrer’s life and accomplishments have been commemorated on a First-Class Forever stamp by the U.S. Postal Service as part of its Distinguished Americans stamp series. The Puerto Rican actor was the first Latino to win an Academy Award. Ferrer, a three-time nominee, lost in his first at-bat (Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the weak-willed Dauphin opposite Ingrid Bergman in Joan of Arc in 1948) before taking home the Best Actor prize for his performance in the title role of Cyrano de Bergerac, which earned him a Tony Award after first playing the role on Broadway in 1946. To honor his roots, he donated his Oscar to the University of Puerto Rico.

Those of you watching the Oscars red carpet were lucky enough to steal a peek of the feature film directed and written by Mexican-American Aurora Guerrero. The movie, Mosquita y Mari, was filmed in Los Angeles’ Huntington Park and focuses on the lives of two high school Chicanos.
