There's a black cloud hanging over Birdman's win for Best Picture at tonight's 87th Annual Academy Awards....
While on-stage presenting the award to Alejandro González Iñárritu and the cast of Birdman, Sean Penn joked: "Who gave this SOB a green card?" Yep. It was awkward, especially following a ceremony filled with thoughtful speeches about equal pay, black rights, suicide, the LGBT community, and more.
Several Latinos took to Twitter to decry the tasteless joke and defend the Mexican director:
And great job Sean Penn. Ruining a fantastic moment with a green card "joke." #Tacky

After Sean Penn's joke about the Green card, Iñarritu's speech killed it! "Thanks to the ones who built this immigrant nation". Brilliant

The Mexicano didn't seem to need anyone's help, however. He graciously accepted the Oscar before delivering an emotional speech about Mexico's government, immigration to the United States and more.
"I want to dedicate this award to my fellow Mexicans. The ones who live in Mexico: I pray that we can find and build a government that we deserve," he said, most likely in reference to the 43 missing students from Iguala.
"And the ones that live in this country who are part of the latest generation of immigrations in this country," he continued. "I pray that they can be treated with the same respect and dignity as the ones who came before and built this incredible, immigrant nation."
Congrats, Iñárritu, on a well-deserved honor and an incredible speech! Hopefully, your words and your work can inspire more Latinos to pursue their dreams.
