Sound Check: The Multi-Talented Debi Nova Goes Solo

Costa Rican artist Debi Nova is hot in more than just the looks department. She’s a vocalist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist that has collaborated with everyone—and I do mean everyone—from Ricky Martin to the Black Eyed Peas. Now she’s getting ready to make her solo debut with the album Luna Nueva (Decca Records; out May 18), a collection of potent pop songs that she sings in Spanish and English.

It’s music for the bi-cultural masses, people. And if you haven’t heard of the 24-year-old, you better familiarize yourself fast. This girl is working with powerhouse producer (and Oscar winner) Gustavo Santaolalla, who is accustomed to creating hit records with acts like Juanes and Café Tacuba, which means that she’s a superstar in the making.

Nova, who started playing piano at age four and created her own band at 14, has been gearing up for this her whole life. And if the first single from the record, “Drummer Boy,” is any indication, she’s a natural. The video for the hip-hop–flavored track was filmed in California’s Vasquez Rocks State Park and features the brunette showcasing her dance skills, as well. Have a look and see if you can sit still—I couldn’t.
