But in a rare 1993 video of Selena Quintanilla, the Mexican-American pop star is seen singing her most iconic song in English. That's right! Unlike the song, which is featured on her fourth studio album Amor Prohibido and also recently featured in Google’s October 17th doodle, this version is about wanting to be a fish. Check out the lyrics below:

Alright, Oh if I had just one wish

If I had one wish

I would like to be a fish

and I'll swim swim swim

Oh under the sea I'd be so free

and I'll say, I'll say

I'd swim swim swim,

under the sea I'd be so free,

I'll say, I'll say

In an interview with Selena’s songwriter, Pete Astudillo, he revealed that during rehearsals they started with the beat to Bidi Bidi Bom Bom but when Queen of Tejano added words they were in English. During the lyric writing process, the chorus of the song was actually “Itty Bitty Bubbles.” Who knows, maybe Selena was way ahead of her time and jumped on the mermaid craze before anyone.

Later on, they kept the beat but changed the lyrics to Spanish and the theme of the song changed from bubbles in the ocean to a Tejano cumbia about a love-struck palpitating heart.
