The nominations for Univision's Premio Lo Nuestro were just announced, and topping the list of artists up for awards are the usual suspects: Juanes, Wisin y Yandel, Aventura...yep, Maná...we're pretty sure you can figure out the rest. Juanes is nominated for five (three of those are for "Song of the Year" in the Rock category) while the other three are up for four awards in their respective categories, The winners are decided by popular vote and will be announced when the show airs March 26, live from Miami, Florida.
Now if you'll excuse us, we have a bone to pick here. When was the last time you saw an awards show where the leading nominees were not these four fellas? We can't even remember! At this point, we could pretty much write these announcements with our eyes closed. Not to mention that there are virutally no ladies nominated for Premio Lo Nuestro (outside of the Mexican Regional categories, Alejandra Guzman, Julieta Venegas and Yuridia are the only solo artists; Belanova and the recently retired RBD the only groups featuring women). Is it because only a handful of female artists released new material in 2008, or has Latin music really gotten this male-centric?
Whatever the reason, now we especially can't wait for Shakira to drop her new album in '09. Come next year, she'll be the one giving increasingly redundant acceptance speeches at award shows, and we wouldn't have it any other way.
