MUSIC ROUNDUP: Prima J Start Their Engines!

Prima J Teams Up with Mun2

Remember Prima J, the Mexicali cousins who got love from Perez Hilton for their first single, “Rock Star,” and then their Spanglish cover of Alicia Keys’ “No One?” Now, the girls are readying their self-titled, major-label debut, which Geffen Records will drop on June 17, and they’re getting the big guns to help promote it. Mun2 has teamed up with the girls to create Prima J: Inside Out, a series of video vignettes that will give a behind-the-scenes look at the making of their first album. The series premieres April 24 online at and on mun2’ “The Shuffle” and will later be combined into a half-hour special for TV. The girls already created a cute video sketch for mun2 in which they put a supernatural twist on their sisterly bond, so we can’t wait to see what they bring next!

Mariah Reaches #1. Did you expect anything less?

It’s Mimi-mania! After showing off her new workout plan to Oprah Winfrey and taking American Idol by storm, Mariah Carey’s new album, E=MC², debuted at the top of the Billboard Top 200 with 463,000 copies sold. According to Billboard, that's the highest debut sales total ever for Carey and the best sales week of 2008 so far. In related chart news, Ray J’s mediocre first-week landing at #22 just got worse—the crooner’s sophomore album plummeted to #35 this week and has only sold 54,700 copies so far. Guess the ladies don’t love Ray J as much as he loves them.

Shakira, Maná and Others Join Lineup for ALAS All-Star Concerts

It’s taken ALAS (America Latnia en Acción Solidaria) a little while to get itself together after a series of scheduled and then cancelled shows, but the nonprofit just announced that on May 17, it will put on all-star concerts in Mexico City and Buenos Aires to raise support for early childhood development programs. In addition to headlining artists Shakira, Juanes and Maná, acts like Babasónicos, Los Tigres del Norte and Paulina Rubio will participate in the concerts, which will also be broadcast live in their respective countries. Oddly, though, the concerts won’t actually be raising money—just awareness. Guess that’s better than nothing…
