Ely Guerra, Julieta Venegas, and Natalia Lafourcade kicked off a European tour together last week in France with a specific goal in mind. The Mexican singers artists hope to “sweeten Mexico’s image” through their music.
The tour, which will make stops in Germany, Italy and Spain over this month, is being organized by Bi100, a project backed by Mexico’s government that celebrates the country’s Bicentennial of Independence.
“There’s music in Mexico, there’s daily life, people go out,” said Venegas. “We won’t deny that things over there are not perfect, but it [this tour] is saying that there are other things going on—that we are also playing music.”
Guerra added that their goal to “sweeten” Mexico’s image is fitting. “I think faith cures,” she said. “I think coming here to perform symbolizes a celebration.”
