Girls, meet your new crush: Vicente Garcia is the face of a new genre we are playfully dubbing “bacha-roots”—an exquisite fusion of tropical rhythms such as bachata, boogaloo and salsa with blues, jazz, folk, soul and pop.
The Dominican’s 10-song debut, Melodrama, now out, was recorded in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Santo Domingo with the help of producer Rafael Lazzaro.
“I can’t talk about influences without mentioning Juan Luis Guerra,” says Garcia, who wrote all the songs on the album and played multiple instruments, of his mentor. “He doesn’t limit himself to one rhythm.”
Guerra returns the love: “Vicente is a great composer and lyricist. I followed the making of his album very closely, and I think he’s achieved a truly unique sound.” With such an endorsement, Garcia can do no wrong.
