When did you know music was going to be your life?
“I started when I was nine. I come from a family of six and I’m the oldest of four and we had just lost our home and had to move into my grandparents’ garage in Inglewood. [During that time] I turned to music. I convinced my parents to let me start taking acting classes and go to auditions. Then at 10 I walked onto my first stage which Universal City Walk. I would say music inspires me. I grew up listening to country music, old school hip-hop, Etta James and the Temptations so music in general has always been there for me. When I was [living in the garage] I was listening to all different kinds of music from like Christina Aguilera to Beyoncé to Selena Quintanilla. “
Your situation reflects what a lot of families are going through now in the U.S. Were you aware of what was going on at the time?
“My parents did a really good job of keeping us kids not so aware of what was going on but I like to think I’m wise beyond my years so it didn’t take me long to figure things out. I felt the duty of being the oldest [sibling] that I had to be strong too. It was hard because we were there for like two years and as preteen having to deal with not having privacy and sharing a bed with three other people.”
How do incorporate your Mexican culture in your music?
“It’s a big part of my life. In my household it’s more of a Spanglish thing. Aside from just the language the lifestyle…I have such a huge family—on both my mom and dad’s sides. Family get togethers—the soul, the music, it just comes naturally. I’m very proud to be Latina.”
Who are some of your musical influences?
“The artist that is at the very top for me is Left Eye from TLC. I love her! I’m going through a phase where I’m bumping Crazy Sexy Cool while I do chores around the house. She definitely has influenced me in many ways. Just rap music in general like watching Missy Elliott and trying to bust out the dance moves.”
How is it working with Dr. Luke?
“First off he’s so down to earth and humble. He’s like a teacher or mentor to me. When he corrects me he doesn’t just say, 'that’s bad do it again.' He gives me the reasons why. He leads me in the right direction. I’m learning a lot about myself through making the album. Being signed to him as a writer and an artist so many opportunities have come along.”
Do you have an obsession?
“I have an obsession with hot sauce. I love Cholula. I put Cholula on everything. I love food in general. I will eat and try everything.”
What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?
“I guess the first time I ate sushi. I love sushi now but it was weird for me the first time. My family likes everything really well done...like toasty. I just discovered that I like my burgers with a little bit of pink. Ever since I was little, I remember my mom saying, 'Very well done, very well done.' [Laughs]"
