Though she graced the cover of last week’s Billboard magazine in leopard lingerie and draped in an American flag, many people still may not know who Mayra Veronica is—but the Cuban-born singer is determined to change that.
Veronica’s latest single, off of her upcoming album Saint nor Sinner, is a highly synthesized pop song titled “Freak Like Me”. In recent weeks, the song climbed all the way to the number two spot on Billboard’s Dance Club Play chart. The single’s video, which stars Italian hottie Antonio Sabato Jr., will be released in a few weeks. Saint nor Sinner is due out in 2012.
Veronica, 30, was born in Cuba and raised in the U.S. She is a former beauty queen (Ms. Miami) but got a big break hosting alongside Don Francisco for Univision’s Don Francisco Presenta. She was also voted “Favorite Pin-Up Girl” by the United States Marines, whom she visited on several tours with the United Services Organizations (USO).
The Cuban singer’s beauty has opened many doors for her, but in the recent Billboard interview, Veronica, who dropped her first album (Vengo Con To) a few years ago, made it clear that she is more than just a pretty face. “That my career happened to have started as a model or sex symbol has nothing to do with the fact that I'm also able to express myself as an artist,” she said. The singer comes from a musical family –her father was a member of Cuban rock band Los Dada.
“I'm bringing stories you can question or relate to,” Veronica told Billboard of her music. “I plan on inspiring you to free yourself from inhibitions—that's my goal as an artist…I'm bringing my soul, and not just my voice.”
