Enrique Iglesias is a straight-shooter who has been spawning out top hits for over a decade now and has sold over 100 million albums worldwide. The 36-year-old pop singer has proven to have (yet another) good year with top singles including, "I Like It" featuring Pitbull and "Tonight (I'm Lovin' You)" off of his latest album, Euphoria.
We recently got a chance to chat exclusively with the Spanish heartthrob about his new drink obession, the 2012 Latin Billboards, and his tour with J.Lo. We warn you, he's really going to make you want a cocktail after this. Check it all out below!
How did you get involved with Atlantico rum?
It started about a year ago but I’ve known about it for the last two and a half years. It’s one of those partnerships that started in a very organic way, through one of my best friends. He got me into drinking the rum and one day he mentioned to me that he knew the guy that started the rum. We started talking and then he said maybe it would be a fun project to partner up together. For me, whenever you partner up with someone, you got to make sure that you’re passionate about it.
What makes this specific rum so special for you?
I just like the taste. I was more of a vodka drinker and then through one of my best friends I started drinking rum, specifically that rum. I drink it on the rocks, or with lemon, or mix it with coke. There’s a lot of ways I like to take it.
This is a sponsorship with the Latin Billboard Awards and you’re nominated in several categories, congratulations. How do you feel about all the love you’ve gotten this year?
It’s been great. The past year has been unbelievable. You can never plan for something like this. I mean, you can plan it but you never know if it’s going to happen or not. It truly boils down to the fans and how they react to it. When it happens — when you put so much effort and so much work into a project and then the reaction is so positive —it’s the best feeling in the world.
You’re also nominated along with many artists you’ve collaborated with for ‘Song Artist of the Year.’ Pitbull is also nominated and Prince Royce. How do you feel about being in this category with other artists that you respect so much and have collaborated with?
They’re friends so for me there’s no win, believe it or not. Last year I had a good year at the Billboards. So I would want Pitbull to win. He’s one of those guys that I’d be just as happy if they won. They are all great really.
Are there any highlights that you’re really looking forward to for the show?
I always respected Billboard because it’s always about true figures and at the end of the day the fans create those figures. That’s what I love about it. There’s no b*llsh*t, it is what it is. It’s very clear and there’s no politics. That for me is great.
We hear J-Lo enlisted you for a world tour, is that fact?
We are in the talks right now, but we might be touring together in July.
How did that come about?
It came about through just different talks. We spoke and it was one of those ideas we just thought would work. We’re both Latino and I’ve always followed her career and I admire her so much. And I thought it’d be a cool idea that our fans would enjoy.
Do you guys have any details on when it would start and what places you’d be hitting up?
It would be starting in July, in the U.S. and Canada. The first show will probably be in New York.
What else do you have lined up?
That’s it right now, really. I’m really passionate about my rum. I feel like it’s the first time that it’s something of mine that I feel that I’ve been there since the beginning. I’m truly proud of Atlantico rum. I love the brand. I love it so much that I’m willing to do a phone interview for it (Laughs).
