EXCLUSIVE: Daddy Yankee Reacts to Census Results: 'Let's Make Ourselves Count as More Than Just Numbers"

We had the pleasure of catching up with none other than the king of reggaeton, Daddy Yankee, earlier today during a press conference hosted by Western Union at the Trump SoHo hotel in NYC. Yankee was in town to promote a new campaign called “Love In Any Language,” where people can create and upload their own original music videos expressing their love for someone—be it a significant other or a family member— to compete for a $10,000 cash prize and the chance to appear at the 2011 Billboard Latin Music Conference and Awards taking place in Miami next month. DY, who knows a thing or two about making it in the music industry, expressed his enthusiasm for the campaign’s concept, especially since he owns his own record label and says he’s been looking for the kind of raw talento de barrio that took him out of the streets of his native P.R.
We couldn’t resist asking the super-fit Yankee (who has shed some 30 pounds in preparation for his next movie role!) about the significance of the Census results released today. “Now that the numbers are out [there are 50 million Latinos in the United States today] the government will realize the sheer power we have in each state and in this country,” said Yankee. “It will only strengthen our communities and make them pay a lot more attention to us, and meet our needs. The important thing is to make our presence felt. I hope the significance of the results is felt all around the world.” Added DY, who has always been passionate about politics: “It’s important that we make ourselves count as more than just numbers.”
We couldn't agree more!
