Esperanza Spalding to Perform at Grammy Awards

Best New Artist nominee, Esperanza Spalding will be performing at this year's Grammy Awards.
The up-and-coming Latina singer/songwriter is the first Jazz singer to be nominated in the breakthrough artist category in 35 years, and she's in good company with fellow nominees like Justin Bieber, and Drake.
“I certainly did not expect to even be considered for that type of nomination, me being a little old jazz musician and everything,” the humble Esperanza told Entertainment Weekly in December. “But it is meaningful, and I don’t want to act like it’s nothing, that someone outside of my little jazz circle knows about me and wanted to acknowledge me.”
This is a great time for Spalding, whose father is African American and mother is of Mexican-Welsh descent. Her 2010 album, Chamber Music Society, hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Albums chart last month, and she’s just wrapping up the “Welcome 2 America” tour with Prince and his band, The New Power Generation.
In addition to her duties as a performer, Spalding is also set to co-host the Grammy Award’s Pre-Telecast Ceremony, which will feature a performance by Cindy Lauper, and will be streamed live on www.grammy.com/live four hours before the televised ceremony.
The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards will air at 8 p.m. on Sunday, February 13 on CBS. Check out grammy.com for a full list of nominees.
