Diego Luna is Directing Calle 13's New Music Video!

Diego Luna’s second feature, Abel—about a nine-year-old boy who becomes the man of the house—is currently making the rounds on the festival circuit. So what does a thespian of his caliber do in between screenings? He directs a Calle 13 video, of course.

The Mexican director just wrapped production on the clip for “El Baile de los Pobres,” a song from the Puerto Rican duo’s upcoming album Detonación C-13, out in October. The video was filmed in two distinct barrios of Mexico City—one marginalized, the other affluent.

The collaboration seems to have grown out of mutual respect and admiration. During a press conference last week, René Pérez of Calle 13 spoke about his regard for Luna: “I trust him…I know his trajectory and I think we achieved a cool product, rounding out a conceptual story. Without limits and with a lot of honest.”

The filmmaker expressed similar sentiments: “I love the honesty with which [Residente and Visitante] live. You can find it in their work, it stands out, especially in an industry that suffers so much and is always trying to find a way to sell. We need more music like Calle 13’s.”

So what can we expect from this unexpected meeting of the minds? “It’s a video without limits; but its not controversial,” said the often-controversial Residente. Hmm, either way, we’re sure it’ll be full of thought-provoking social commentary.
