David Archuleta's done it again! The American Idol Season 7 runner-up sold enough copies (183,000) of his self-titled debut album to land at #2 on this week's Billboard 200 chart. The teen pop singer only trailed country starlet Taylor Swift, who sold a whopping 592,000 copies of her sophomore set, Fearless.
Allow us to indulge in a little obsessive Idol number-crunching to break down the significance of Chuleta's debut. While his sales are not quite on par with those posted by Idol's most famous alum (Kelly Clarkson debuted with 297,000 back in 2003, Carrie Underwood with 314,000 in 2005, and Chris Daughtry with 304,000 in 2006), it does reverse what had appeared to be a downward slide. Last year's top finishers, Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis, sold 119,000 and 98,000 copies in their first weeks on the chart, respectively. Overall, this bodes very well for the pintsize second-place finisher of 2008!
Expect the numbers to be even bigger for David A. once his second single drops (We hope it's "Touch My Hand"!). We're also predicting major sales figures next week for his rival David Cook, whose own debut album dropped this week.
Hmm...can you tell we love American Idol?
