Daddy Yankee is the reigning king of Spotify!
On Sunday, the Puerto Rican heartthrob became the first Latin artist to reach No. 1 on the music platform. The reggaetonero, who is known for popular hits such as "Gasolina" and "Despascito," dethroned Ed Sheeran from the top spot when he reached over 44,735,586 monthly listeners.
"Being the first Latin artist to reach No. 1 on Spotify marks a precedent not only for my career but the industry in general," Daddy Yankee said in an email to the AP. "The musical digital revolution has unified the world, and this is the proof. We are all in the same boat with no labels or stereotypes."
Daddy Yankee, whose real name is Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez, celebrated the achievement by posting a video on Instagram thanking his fans.
I #Reggaeton
Topping Spotify isn't the only accomplishment the 40-year-old is celebrating these days. The singer's hit "Shaky Shaky" reached more than a billion views on YouTube, making it the first reggaeton song to surpass that many views in less than a year. And his "Despacito" collaboration with Luis Fonsi also reached No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. It's the first Spanish-language track to get this honor since 1996's "Macarena."
Congratulations Daddy Yankee! We can't wait to see what record you'll break next.
