Bruno Mars returned to his roots during a recent first-time visit to Puerto Rico, where he had a photo shoot for a Vogue magazine fashion spread with a fellow boricua, model Joan Smalls.
“The coolest thing for me is that this is like my heritage,” said the part-Puerto Rican Grammy Award-winning singer, in a video for the fashion magazine. “Being Puerto Rican and seeing people with my skin color, my hair, my features – I feel like I’m home.”
Of course, part of the fun of visiting Puerto Rico was collaborating with the talented international photographer Peter Lindbergh, who captured Mars enjoying the tropical island in its most colorful glory.
“I think I owe a lot of my fashion to my father," said Mars. "He was the one that always told me, ‘When you walk into a room, you have to let them know you’re there [with] the way you walk, the way you do your hair, how you wear your hats,” he said about his Puerto Rican father, Peter Hernandez. “That’s because of my Pops.”
