Bruno Mars, he of the sparkling pinky ring, just released his third solo album, the titillating 24K Magic.
It’s an album full of bravado, sex (of course) and party ish—in other words, it’s wavy AF. For those of us who grew up in the ‘90s, the overall vibe should sound extremely familiar—New Jack Swing, anyone? Led by super producer Teddy Riley and artists like Keith Sweat, Jodeci, Bell Biv DeVoe, TLC and many more, New Jack Swing was street-savvy, danceable R&B music. Consider 24K Magic a 2016 homage to the New Jack Swing but on human growth hormone because it is presented by one of the best artists of our generation.
“With this album, it’s not a [genre] that’s in style at all right now, but when I hear that music a lot of things happen for me,” Mars tells Latina exclusively. “A) You gotta be able to know how to dance, and B) You gotta be able to sing. All these guys that we’re talking about—New Edition, Boyz II Men—these guys were just killers. That’s what I wanted to do with this album. I wanted to see the band moving, and I want people when they hear the album and get excited to come see us live. And I wanna be singing the shit out of these songs.”
He continued: “This album, we wanted to see how far we could take that and capture the spirit of that music we fell in love with."
You’ll get the opportunity to see Mars and his squad starting in March 2017. Until then, stream the album via itunes, Spotify, Apple Music, and BrunoMars.com, and feel all the throwback vibes with our New 24K Swing playlist below.
