Zoe Saldaña Dishes on 'Star Trek,' Her Mom, and Secret to Success (EXCLUSIVE)

What character stayed with you long after you wrapped the film?

I think my character on Avatar [Na’vi] stayed with me for a really long time and also my character in Colombiana. I think it’s because of all the action that was necessary for those roles. They made me more hyper than I already am [Laughs].

On a personal level, what lessons has your mother taught you about life?

Oh God, my mom influences me everyday! She still tells me how to do the dishes! She is so important in my life. She is always reminding me that I matter just as much as anyone else. She knows how to center me and reminds me about what truly matters in life. At the end of the day, you have to care about yourself more than you care about other people’s opinions.

What is your next dream project?

I really want to direct. I don’t just want to be in front of the camera. I want to be behind-the-scenes telling everyone what to do! I love directors like James Cameron, David Fincher, and J.J. Abrams, of course. I would really want to follow in their footsteps one day.

Star Trek Into Darkness hits theaters nationwide on May 16th. Are you looking forward to the film?
