After it was reported that Benicio del Toro was set to play a bad guy in the Star Trek sequel by J.J. Abrams, it looks as though there’s no future for the 44-year-old Boricua actor in the sci-fi franchise after all.

According to Movie Fone, the Oscar-winning Del Toro was said to be playing Kahn Noonien Singh, a genetically engineered super villain in the Star Trek universe.

The role of Singh was made famous by the late award-winning Mexican actor Ricardo Montalbán, who played the villain in the 1967 episode “Space Seed” of the first season of the original Star Trek series. Montalbán, who died in 2009 at age 88, also played Singh in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

When Abrams was asked whether or not Del Toro will be playing the villain, Movie Fone reports that the director said it was “not true.”

We can’t help but feel a bit disappointed that Del Toro will no longer be playing Singh; it would have been great to see another Latino try to fill Montalbán’s shoes.

Oh well.
