Pedro Almodovar's new movie, Los Abrazos Rotos (Broken Embraces)—which stars freshly minted Oscar winner Penelope Cruz and is said to be Spanish auteur's take on film noir—doesn't come out in the U.S. for another whole 8 months. But we're more than happy to taunt ourselves (and by extension, you—sorry!) with preview trailers, clips and behind-the-scenes scoops until we can finally see it.
The biggest tease so far comes from Showbizcafe.com, which has landed exclusive footage of seven scenes from Embraces that you can view here. Not surprisingly, many of the clips feature Cruz in various melodramatic, Almodovar-ian states—from tear strewn to wheelchair-bound—and characters reciting dialogue that echoes the film within the film playing in the background, to unnerving effect. It's all at once very meta and vintage Hollywood, and we love it.
Of course, Almodovar's own soundbites are just as enticing. At a press conference last Friday in Spain, where the film will premiere this week, the director told reporters that Broken Embraces "is a romantic movie, with intertwined stories of love. But underlying them all is my love for cinema." That sentiment is well represented in the teaser trailer (press play below to watch), which displays Cruz holding, clutching and passionately—well, embracing—all of the men and women in her life. This is about capturing love in all its dimensions; and who better than Almodovar to do the honors?
Of course, we're eating up all of these previews and can't wait for the final product. How excited are you to see Broken Embraces?
