Selena Gomez is headed for the big screen. The 16-year-old Disney star has signed on for a lead role in Beezus and Ramona, a 20th Century Fox-produced movie based on the popular tween lit series, Ramona, by Beverly Cleary.

Gomez will play Beezus, the intellectually gifted older sister of Ramona, played by 9-year-old wunderkind actress Joey King. King, who has been racking up credits in CSI, Entourage and Quarantine since the age of 4, was handpicked from hundreds of girls who auditioned for the Ramona role.

A release date for the film is already set for March 19, 2010, by which time Gomez will be almost 18 and King will be a whopping 10.75 years old.

Congrats to both girls! Here's hoping they both keep making career moves like these and avoid the pitfalls of young starlet-dom.
