Sean Penn is currently in discussion to star in the upcoming film Cartel, a drama for Universal Pictures.

Penn is considering the role of Ed Marker, a man on a journey to protect his son after his wife is murdered by men involved in the super violent Mexican cartels. The drama originally took root as a remake of La Scorta, a 1993 Italian film about four cops struggling to guard a lawyer prosecuting mafia bosses, but eventually evolved into an action film for Penn set in Mexico.

Asger Leth, who made the award winning documentary Ghosts of Cite Soleil about street gangs in Port-Au-Prince is set to direct Cartel. The film is expected to go into production this summer.
