What to Expect When You're Expecting, starring Rodrigo Santoro, Jennifer Lopez, and Cameron Diaz, is the new comedy about the joys and woes about parenting and the power of fatherhood – something that the Brazilian actor's character tries to embrace. We spoke to him exclusively about filming with J.Lo, his love of soccer, and whether he's single. Check it out below:
We are so excited about your movie What to Expect When You're Expecting. In the film you play J.Lo’s partner Alex. Are you anything like your character in real life?
"Yes, I think we are both creative. He’s a musician and I act, but we have that creativity in common."
As a couple, you guys are facing challenges with starting a family and are thinking about adopting. What did you think about the storyline when you read the script?
"I actually really liked it. I didn’t know exactly what character they had in mind for me [to play], but I especially liked Alex’s storyline. I felt like it was interesting. Particularly Alex’s journey, because at first he’s unsure about being a father and whether he’s ready for parenthood, but throughout the movie he slowly gets encouraged and overcomes his own fears. He grows up."
What was it like filming with Jennifer Lopez?
"It was great! She was very easy to work with. She’s a great artist and just a natural. She told me, 'Let’s have a good time and make the couple full of energy.' I think that was a good basis for our performance – especially when conflict starts to bubble up after she decides to adopt. That relationship starts to become threatened by this new change. We talked a little bit about that transition in the characters and I’m glad because it really added to our chemistry."
In a recent interview, she said that it was hard for her to take her hands off of you. Is that true?
(Laughs) "No, it became a joke with the director. He has such a great sense of humor. One day we were filming and [Lopez] and I were suppose to be very playful and affectionate and the director joked and said, 'You guys, I think you are doing too much. Can you kiss a little bit less?' And we said, 'Well, we are just playing the couple here.' And we laughed about it. It became this big joke behind the set. There’s nothing more than that to it."
Would you say romantic comedies are more fun for you to film?
"Well, I’m not really used to it. This is the second one that I film. I feel like I don’t have enough experience yet to decide whether I enjoy them more, but they are fun to film. It was light and fun."
Would you like to have kids someday? Or considered fatherhood recently?
"Oh yeah, for sure. I would love to be a dad someday. When the right time comes, I would love to."
Do you have a special someone in your life right now?
"Right now I’m single."
As an actor you maintain yourself very fit and active, what are some of your indulgences?
"I love sports. I love playing soccer. I like to just feel good. I was raised in Rio so the outdoors is a big part of our childhood. It inspires me. I love just enjoying the day."
What other projects do you see yourself working on in the future?
"There’s a lot to come. There are three movies that are going to come out soon. One is called Hemingway & Gellhorn for HBO. It will come out at the end of this month. I also have an action movie coming out by the end of the year with Arnold Schwarzenegger called The Last Stand. My role is this troubled guy. It takes place in a small town. Arnold plays a sheriff."
What’s one thing people don’t know about you?
"Oh so many things!" (Laughs) "I don’t know. What do they know about me is my question? I really enjoy riding horses. I grew up doing that with my family and I just love it."
