It’s a great time to be an animated cat! Puss in Boots reportedly topped the box office this weekend after opening this past Friday, according to FOX News.
The DreamWorks animated film, which stars Spanish actor Antonio Banderas and our November cover girl Salma Hayek, opened with an estimated $34 million.
In the film, Banderas voices the lead feline hero, Puss, and 45-year-old Hayek voices Puss’ street-smart ally, Kitty Softpaws.
EW reports that 51 percent of Puss in Boots’ box office numbers came from 3D screens, and 7 percent came from IMAX theaters. In second place was Paranormal Activity 3, a sequel to 2007’s found footage horror film. The good news for Puss in Boots doesn’t stop with its $34 million opening; FOX News Latino is reporting that 35 percent of the audience was made up of Latinos! We are so happy to see Latino audience supporting Latino actors in film!
FOX News reports that the biggest disappointment in the box office this weekend was The Rum Diary, which also opened this past Friday. The film starring Johnny Depp and one of our fave Puerto Rican actors, Amaury Nolasco, earned just $5 million.
Congrats to Banderas and our cover girl on the promising success of Puss in Boots! The longtime friends and previous co-stars have been everywhere promoting for the film. On her role as Kitty Softpaws, Hayek had nothing but great things to say: “For me, doing Puss in Boots was irresistible,” she said. “I had to do this role because I love Puss in Boots.”
