Is Puerto Rico the Next Hollywood?

Power couple Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony were in Puerto Rico last Friday participating in a local conference regarding film incentives. Governor Luis G. Fortuño recently approved new legislation that revamps its program, offering the U.S. tax rebates along with a 20 % rebate for nonresidents including the pre-existing 40% rebate for residents.

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony flew down to the island and were embraced as ambassadors of Puerto Rico, showing their full support for the Incentivos Económicos para la Industria Fílmica. Anthony stated that his first mission, which will start in a few weeks, is to take a trip to Hollywood and convince major California producers of the advantages of shooting in the Caribbean island.

Secretary of Economic Development and Commerce, Jose Ramon Perez-Rivera told Variety,  “We really didn’t have much of a movie industry coming from outside Puerto Rico. It was evident how big of an impact it could have on the economy."

More than 60 productions having been shot in Puerto Rico over the last decade, including Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Fast Five and The Losers. Perez-Rivera claims that there are plans for Die Hard 5 and Potsdamer Platz to shoot on the island as well. Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony closed out the conference by saying they always felt that La Isla del Encanto was a great location for filming, rekindling rumors that the duo may be planning on building a movie studio in Puerto Rico.

Anibal Melendez, the mayor of the coastal city of Fajardo, said Lopez and Anthony hope to build a studio in his town but reps for the couple declined comment.
