From the jaw-dropping opening sequence (gargantuan, dragon-like creatures arising from the bay to wreak havoc on San Francisco), it becomes apparent this isn’t any ordinary film. The action and fight scenes never grow monotonous and Del Toro is a master of set design and effects.
"When I had a fever as a small child, I dreamed about giant robots, and I loved the kaiju robots because they were an enormous spectacle," Del Toro said. "I wanted to provide a fresh and spectacular look at those two mythologies for a new generation."
The international cast is brilliant, and stars English TV actors Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) and Idris Elba (The Wire) and Oscar nominee Rinko Kikuchi (Babel).
When the credits rolled, several rounds of applause ensued. Youth and their families from Pacoima’s holistic poverty relief organization MEND (Meet Each Need with Dignity) took part in the revelry.
