Latin Hollywood Report: Lots of Sex, Hobbits and Women in Chains!

Hello, box office! Congratulations, girls. You fueled a spectacular opening weekend for the Sex and the City movie, which raked in $55.7 million. That’s the best-ever opening weekend numbers for an R-rated comedy. The old girls bitch-slapped old boy Harrison Ford and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which settled for second place at $46 million. Rounding out the top three was the thriller The Strangers, starring Liv Tyler, which made $20.7 million. Long love girl power!

Looks like The Hobbit has its Bilbo Baggins. Rumors are swirling that James McAvoy is close to signing on to play the hobbit who accidentally finds the ring of power in author J.R.R. Tolkien’s prequel to the Lord of the Rings book trilogy. Guillermo del Toro, who will direct the movie, refused to comment, saying only, "I can tell you it's down to a few names that we all agree upon. For our first choice we all said the same name, it was completely magical." It wouldn’t be McAvoy’s first foray into fantasyland: He played the faun Mr. Tumnus in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe. In equally exciting news for Ringheads, also rumored to be signed on to The Hobbit is Ian McKellen, returning as Gandalf. In the G-man’s immortal words: You shall not pass…me up!

What could be grosser than Robert Rodriguez and homebreaker fiancée Rose McGowan as a couple? The idea of them working together. No, we’re not talking about Barbarella, the movie remake to be directed by the tejano helmer and starring McGowan, and which was reportedly shelved by Universal because studio heads were unhappy with McGowan as the lead. No, we’re talking about a TV show idea the couple is shopping around to networks. Called Women in Chains, it is about life inside a female prison and it sounds like vintage Rodriguez: Far from offering a realistic look at locked up women, the show would go the way of 70s exploitation films, with “sadistic guards, cafeteria hosedowns and mud wrestling” on offer. Classy!
