Kenny Ortega will direct a remake of 1987 hit film Dirty Dancing. The iconic film about a teenage girl (Jennifer Grey) who falls in love with her handsome dance instructor (Patrick Swayze), grossed $214 million worldwide. Ortega, whose directorial roster includes the 2009 documentary Michael Jackson’s This Is It and Disney’s major hit High School Musical trilogy, was the original choreographer for Dirty Dancing.
In a written statement, the 61-year-old Spanish director stated: “The opportunity to direct Dirty Dancing is like returning home for me. The director said that Swayze, who passed away from pancreatic cancer two years ago, “set the bar for men dancing in the movies as Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire did before him.”
“I believe everywhere you look there is evidence that the talent is out there,” Ortega added, “and I can’t wait to begin the process of discovering the next breakout triple-threats.”
