Kate Winslet is a dream crusher! Just kidding (ish), but the English actress definitely delivered a sad blow to our Oscar hopes last night with her double win at the 2009 Golden Globes. Winslet beat out Penelope Cruz early in the night, taking home the Best Supporting Actress prize for her role in the little-seen The Reader. Then, she shocked everyone by winning the Best Actress award over Anne Hathaway for her performance in Revolutionary Road, the drama period piece in which she plays opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.
Penelope looked genuinely sad to have lost, and we especially feel her pain because this does not bode well for her chances at an Oscar. It's her second loss to Kate this week, and even though Penelope still has more pre-Oscar wins, the fact that she won two awards last night seriously ups her chances of winning at least one Academy Award. The category she'll most likely have to forfeit to another actress? We hate to say it, but it's probably going to be Best Actress, leaving Penelope with a much lesser shot at a statue than she had just two days ago.
Let's choose to ignore those odds for the next five weeks or so, though, and keep hoping for the best. What do you think: can Penelope still take home the Oscar, or does Kate have her beat?
