Hermanas We Heart

We chicas spend a considerable amount of time trying to find The One—no wonder there are so many romantic comedies out there!  But the truth is that some of the most rewarding relationships we have are the ones with our hermanas, whether they be tied to us by blood that (as in Selena Gomez’s new movie, Ramona and Beezus) or by friendship. And there are some great movies that reflect that.

1. Hermanas - Tortilla Soup

Tortilla Soup

Elizabeth Peña, Jacqueline Obradors and Tamara Mello play three very different sisters—one’s repressed, another is plagued by doubts and the third caught up in material things. But as they come together through the one thing they have in common—their dad’s (Hector Elizondo) traditional, lavish family dinners—to find love, passion and fulfillment, teaching us about the push and pull of sisterly relationships along the way.

2. Hermanas - Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

These four girls (including characters played by America Ferrera and Alexis Bledel) are not even related, but what makes their story work is the heartwarming, true-to-life way they manage to keep their friendship and closeness strong while growing up and becoming distinct individuals. No wonder the metaphor for the perfect friendship is a single pair of jeans that magically fit each girl.

3. Hermanas - Bandidas

Penelope Cruz
and Salma Hayek are joined at the hip in real life and their chemistry and comfort level with each other absolutely translates onscreen as they play, respectively, a tomboyish farm girl and a spoiled rich chick who turn into bank robbers to avenge their families. It’s like watching two people who have known each other all their lives rib each other at the family barbecue.

4. Hermanas - In the Time of Butterflies

In the Time of Butterflies

To live and grow together is one thing; to die together is entirely another. This adaptation of Julia Alvarez’s fiction book about the real-life Mirabal sisters (starring Salma Hayek), who opposed Dominican dictator Truillo’s repressive government and paid for it with their lives, brings to light a whole other level of sisterhood. The women are not just tied by blood, but by their commitment to justice.

5. Hermanas - Our Family Wedding

Our Family Wedding

This film is really about a Latino family and a black family coming together through the wedding of their children. But it’s the relationship between Lucia (America Ferrera) and Isabella (Anjelah Johnson) that makes you want to come back for more. Lucia is an idealistic dreamer, while Isabella is plain-spoken and practical and their dynamic is magnetic!
