Guillermo Del Toro Gives Sneak-Peek of 'The Book of Life'

Guillermo Del Toro gave fans at San Diego Comic-Con a sneak peek at his highly-anticipated animated flick The Book of Life.

The celebrated Mexican filmmaker told audiences that the movie seeks to celebrate -- not steal from -- the tradition of Dia de los Muertos, a holiday intended to commemorate the dead. Director Jorge Gutierrez agreed, and told the audience that the film struck a personal chord.

"My grandfather said to me, 'Jorgito, never let the truth get in the way of a good story," he said. He also revealed that The Book of Life draws inspiration from the stories of his family. "It's sort of a recipe book of all the stories I heard growing up."

According to io9Gutierrez meshed together many of his personal loves to create the stunning animated feature. Everything from videogames to opera to churros to the English-language music he grew up listening to will be featured in the film. However, Dia de Los Muertos served as the primary influence. "I got married on the Day of the Dead because I wanted my best friend who passed away to be my best man, and I wanted my family to be there," he told the audience.

For Gutierrez, honoring the holiday -- and the deceased -- was paramount to the creation of the film. "My favorite thing about it is the core belief of the holiday: as long as we tell the stories of the people, sing their songs, cook their food, and tell their stories - they are with us."

The movie, which hits theaters October 17, stars Channing Tatum, Diego Luna and Zoe Saldana. Watch a sneak peek of The Book of Life below, courtesy of MTV
