It’s only been out for 17 days, but James Cameron’s Avatar is blowing away the competition and breaking records. It’s been number one in the U.S. for three straight weeks, raising its domestic total to $352.1 million. The film, starring Zoe Saldana and Michelle Rodriguez, has crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide, a feat that has only been achieved by a total of five films. In fact, Cameron’s 1997’s Titanic maintains the top spot with $1.8 billion earned worldwide. Avatar is on pace to change all of that very shortly. The other three films in the distinguished $1 billion category include, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and The Dark Knight.
"It's like a runaway freight train. It just keeps doing business," said Fox distribution executive Bert Livingston to The Huffington Post. "Here's what's happening: I think everybody has to see Avatar once. Even people who don't normally go to the movies, they've heard about it and are saying, 'I have to see it.' Then there's those people seeing it multiple times."
Are you one of those people? What did you think of Avatar? Does it deserve all of this hype?
