2011 Oscars: Recasting ‘Toy Story 3’

We continue our series with the only animated movie nominated for Best Picture at this year’s Oscars, Toy Story 3.

1. Toy Story 3: Intro

2. Toy Story 3: Tom Hanks/Lin Manuel Miranda

WOODY

Played by Tom Hanks, 54 in the film

Recasting: Lin Manuel Miranda, 31

Why He’s Right for the Part: Anyone who saw Lin Manuel Miranda in Broadway’s In the Heights knows that Lin is a rollercoaster of emotions onstage—much like Woody, the old-fashioned cowboy sheriff in Toy Story 3. Lin also has the high-pitched voice and the excitable personality that makes Woody so charming and appealing. In the Tony-winning musical, Lin was the leader of the predominantly Dominican Washington Heights barrio, which makes him the perfect choice to play the voice of reason and dependably guide the other toys in Toy Story 3.

3. Toy Story 3: Tim Allen/Bobby Cannavale

BUZZ LIGHTYEAR

Played by Tim Allen, 57, in the film

Recasting: Bobby Cannavale, 39

Why He’s Right for the Part: For the role of the macho, heroic, space ranger action figure Buzz Lightyear—Woody’s main man and confidante—we like Bobby Cannavale, who has a husky, deep, masculine tone to his voice that counters his other, less manly qualities. Like Buzz, Bobby is only vaguely heroic in his roles and there’s a side to him—no matter how serious he’s trying to be—that makes us laugh and giggle. We think Cannavale can take this role, “To infinity…and beyond!”
