20 Movies Starring Latinos We Want to Watch in 2013!

A new year means new movies and the start of new Oscar buzz! Whether moviegoers are looking for a laugh-out-loud comedy, a serious crime drama, an animated film for the whole family or something in between, Latino actors and directors have audiences covered.

We know which movies starring or directed by Latinos we’re looking forward to seeing this year. Flip through our 2013 movie bucket list to make a list of your own and, just for fun, see if you can spot potential Oscar contenders before they even hit theaters! 

1. 2013 Movies: Spring Breakers

Spring Breakers (March)

Pulling away from her good girl Disney image a bit, Selena Gomez stars alongside Ashley Benson, Vanessa Hudgens, Rachel Korine and James Franco in the ultimate, raucous, much talked about spring break movie, Spring Breakers. The film follows four childhood friends, now college students, looking to get out of town and have an adventurous spring break experience. This is probably where the similarities to any spring break viewers have ever been on ends. In the search for the perfect vacation, the ladies get tangled up with notorious drug and arms dealer Alien (Franco) who has his own plans for the naivetés. Needless to say, a roller coaster of a trip ensues, and the girls may end up getting a little more fun than they bargained for!  

2. 2013 Movies: The Last Stand

The Last Stand (January)

Movie goers didn’t have to wait long to see some of their favorite Latinos hit the big screen! The recent release of The Last Stand has Brazilian cutie Rodrigo Santoro and Puerto Rican actor Luis Guzmán already entertaining action film fanatics. These guys star alongside Forest Whitaker and Johnny Knoxville in Arnold Scharzenegger’s return to acting. Take these well-known actors, throw in drugs, weapons and a Chevrolet Corvette C6 ZR1, and you’re left with a classic Schwarzenegger-style face off.  

3. 2013 Movies: Parker

Parker (January)

After a few lighter romantic comedies, which she is also fantastic in, Jennifer Lopez returns to more gritty movies in this month’s big screen thriller, Parker. Based on a book by the same name, Lopez plays Leslie Rogers, a real estate agent who is enlisted to help thief-with-morals Parker (Jason Statham) plot his revenge against his once trusted larcenous crew who have recently betrayed him. The trailer reveals murder, disguise, intrigue, and Lopez’s 40 plus bangin’ body!

4. 2013 Movies: I'm So Excited

I’m So Excited (March)

Flight danger hasn’t been this much fun since 1980’s Airplane! In this comedic gem Oscar winning director Pedro Almodóvar brings to life a plethora of crazy characters performing musical numbers and confessing secrets aboard a seemingly doomed aircraft in I’m So Excited!, the original Spanish title is Los amantes pasajeros. The movie stars Javier Cámara, Cecilia Roth, Lola Dueñas and Raúl Arévalo with cameos by Antonio Banderas, Penélope Cruz and Paz Vega – talk about excited!

5. 2013 Movies: Star Trek

Star Trek Into Darkness (May)

Trekkies everywhere are ready for the return of the lovely Zoe Saldana playing Nyota Uhura in Star Trek Into Darkness, the second film in the Star Trek franchise. In this installment Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) leads the crew of the Enterprise on a manhunt amongst their own organization to sniff out a singular man of mass destruction. If Saldana continues to play important characters in major Hollywood blockbuster franchises, there’s no guessing just how far she’ll go!

6. 2013 Movies: The Place Beyond the Pines

The Place Beyond the Pines (March)

Fans of phenomenal actress Eva Mendes and beau Ryan Gosling can finally see where their picturesque relationship began when drama The Place Beyond the Pines is released this year. Gosling plays a stunt rider who turns to crime in an effort to support his girlfriend, Mendes, and their child. Unluckily for the pair, the cop-turned-politician played by Bradley Cooper is on the case.

7. 2013 Movies: Filly Brown

Filly Brown (April)

Jenni Rivera’s first, and sadly last, try at acting is coming to theaters this year. The film debuted to rave reviews at 2012’s Sundance and HBO Latino International Film Festivals. In the dramatic film about an LA street poet trying to make it big in the music industry, “La Diva de la Banda” plays Maria Tonorio, the main character’s jailed mother, who attempts to help her daughter achieve success. Edward James Olmos, a fellow actor in the film, said of Rivera’s performance, “Her acting is incredible. She can win the Oscar.” 

8. 2013 Movies: Fast and Furious 6

Fast and Furious 6 (May)

Michelle Rodriguez is returning to the role that helped launch her into the big leagues. The part Dominican, part Puerto Rican actress will respire her role as Letty Ortiz for the sixth installment of the The Fast and the Furious franchise, Fast and Furious 6. Used to playing the hard as nails tough girl, Rodriguez will not disappoint fans who idolize her ability to not go down without a fight.    

9. 2013 Movies: Boom Town

Boom Town (Summer)

Fans of Cuban heartthrob William Levy will have the opportunity to see the actor outside of their dreams this summer when he stars as the lead role in the Oscar Torres produced Boom Town. This western action drama set in the early 1900s tells the story of border town businessman (Levy) who becomes the target of the shady sheriff and infamous land boss when they discover he is a wealthy man. “It’s the story of an everyday man stepping up and becoming a hero, something all of us as children dream of becoming one day,” Levy said of the film.

10. 2013 Movies: Turbo

Turbo (July)

No movie list is complete without a fun animated flick for the whole family! DreamWorks Animation promises just that with their newest movie entitled Turbo about a snail, voiced by Ryan Reynolds, who is tired of the slow paced life his fellow snails enjoy. Through a freak accident Turbo acquires the impossible speed he has always hoped for, and a chance to race in the Indy 500! What makes this movie even better? Latino stars Michelle Rodriguez, Luis Guzmán, and Michael Peña lend their voices to several characters in this soon-to-be box office hit. 

11. 2013 Movies: Grown Ups 2

Grown Ups 2 (July)

It looks to be a year of sequels, and it appears the guys of the popular 2010 comedy Grown Ups are back for round two in the aptly named Grown Ups 2. The breathtaking Salma Hayek returns as fashion designer Roxanne Chase, the wife Adam Sandler’s character. The film revisits the same kind of shenanigans fans enjoyed the first time around; only this time the setting is the kids’ last day of school. Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, and Steve Buscemi also return. 

12. 2013 Movies: Pacific Rim

Pacific Rim (July)

Only Guillermo del Toro could think up a larger than life war between massive monsters and colossal robots and make it come to life to the thrill of moviegoers. The Mexican director creates a world where beastly monsters emerge from the Pacific Ocean ready to deprive humans of their resource and their lives. What better to fight fire with than with fire? Huge, robotic Jaegers maneuvered by pilots are designed to defeat the creatures, but which side will win? Will good be able to triumph over evil? Viewers will have to wait until this year when it all will be revealed in Pacific Rim.

13. 2013 Movies: Elysium

Elysium (August)

Ever imagine what the world will be like in the future, more specifically 2159? Elysium explores this time in the future when a division of the classes dictates whether inhabitants reside on the wealthy space station Elysium or are left to live on a ruined earth. The film teams up mother/daughter duo Sonia Braga and Alice Braga for the first time on the big screen. The ever sexy Diego Luna is also a part of the gifted cast along with Puerto Rican beauty Talisa Soto, Matt Damon, and Jodie Foster.

14. 2013 Movies: Getaway

Getaway (August)

When Selena Gomez announced about a year ago that she would be stepping away from her music to focus on acting for a little while, she wasn’t kidding! The multi-talented Latina actress will star in the crime-action movie Getaway as Kid, a hacker attempting to help reunite a retired racecar driver husband (Ethan Hawke) with his kidnapped wife. Fast cars and intelligent leading ladies sounds like a winning mix!

15. 2013 Movies: Sin City 2

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (October)

It’s been seven years in the making, and enthusiasts have certainly been counting, but Robert Rodriguez is finally returning to the groundbreaking neo-noir comic based film that started a craze. To the delight of fans, the male more than anyone else, Jessica Alba and Rosario Dawson are reprising their roles, and they’ll be joined by the striking Alexa Vega in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. Think Sin City but bigger, better and more beautiful Latinas!  

16. 2013 Movies: Gravity

Gravity (October)

Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón is turning heads and starting Oscar buzz with his revolutionary take on outer space. Famous for directing movies like Y Tu Mama También and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Cuarón’s newest film, to be shot in 3D, will pack a punch right from the very start. George Clooney and Sandra Bullock play astronauts stranded in space after their shuttle is damaged by debris. This movie promises to be out of this world – quite literally!

17. 2013 Movies: The Counselor

The Counselor (November)

There are already whisperings about Oscar potential for Ridley Scott and Cormac McCarthy’s The Counselor, and it’s not due out until the end of the year! If the caliber of the cast is any indication of the film’s greatness, the Oscar whisperings must be spot on. Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz and John Leguizamo are all a part of this talented cast along with the movie’s lead actor Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt. The Counselor takes place along the Mexican border (the same location that earned Bardem the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor when he acted in McCarthy’s No Country for Old Men adaptation) and is about a lawyer who becomes caught up in disastrous drug trafficking.    

18. 2013 Movies: Fading Gigolo

Fading Gigolo (TBA)

The 2013 comedy Fading Gigolo stars the ever lovely Sofia Vergara alongside heavy hitters such as Woody Allen, John Turturro, Liev Schreiber and Sharon Stone. The story focuses on two aging men looking to make some quick cash by doing what else but becoming gigolos. Though Vergara denies it, rumors continue to fly about a potential threesome involving her character and Stone’s character. It sounds like curious minds will have to flock to the theaters to find out!

19. 2013 Movies: Chavez

Chavez (TBA)

Michael Peña stars as Cesar Chavez in the biography Chavez about the life of the famous civil rights activist and labor organizer who worked to unite braceros against the racism and brutality of large industrial farms during the 1960s and 70s. The film is not only full of archival material about Chavez, but also includes anecdotes as told by his relatives. The Diego Luna directed movie also stars America Ferrera and Rosario Dawson.  

20. 2013 Movies: Machete Kills

Machete Kills (TBA)

Director Robert Rodriguez has assembled a killer cast for his big screen action flick Machete Kills, the sequel to 2010’s Machete. The movie will star nearly every Latino A-lister including Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Danny Trejo, Sofia Vergara, Demián Bichir, Antonio Banderas, Zoe Saldana, Edward James Olmos and Alexa Vega to name a few.  The story follows Machete (Trejo) in his mission to bring down an arms dealer and madman who has vowed to bring widespread war to the planet. Though recent legal issues may delay the release, fans everywhere are crossing their fingers hoping to see the movie this year!
