Lean on Me: How Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon Are There For Each Other During the Tough Times

When Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey secretly got married on a Bahamas beach in 2008, just about everyone went "huh?" Carey, who was then 39 and Cannon, who at 27 was 12 years Mariah's junior, had been dating for less than two months when they vowed to spend the rest of their lives together, prompting skeptics to wonder if this was yet another spontaneous, short-lived Hollywood fling. But whenever Mariah was asked whether her relationship with Nick was legit, she responded by saying that peoples' doubts are always erased when they see her and Nick together.

These aren't just words. Mariah and Nick have stood by one another through some difficult times. And this week, with Nick being in the hospital for kidney failure, Mariah has literally been by his side, sitting on his hospital bed and looking after his needs. It's a relationship of give and take, support and love.

Here are six ways Nick and Mariah have helped each other get through the tough times over the years.

1. Mariah and Nick slide 1

Before their twins Monroe and Moroccan, aka “Dem babies,” were born last year, Mariah and Nick suffered a miscarriage in 2008. “It kind of shook us both and took us into a place that was really dark and difficult,” Mariah told Access Hollywood. Nick gushed about his wife's resilience. "It was emotional for both of us and that's when I saw the strength," he said. "She handled it so well and then to get on the plane and have to spend Christmas with friends and family, it definitely brought us closer together. It strengthened our relationship so much."

2. Mariah and Nick slide 2

When Mariah became pregnant with twins, she had a difficult pregnancy that included preeclampsia and gestational diabetes and prolonged doctor-ordered bed-rest. Through it all, Nick stayed by her side, and during lighter times, even helped her not give in to all of her cravings by eating all of the food that she prepared.

3. Mariah and Nick slide 3

When Mariah went into labor on the couple’s anniversary on April 30, Nick told The Talk hostesses about how he became the “producer” of the event, holding the video camera and playing music at her bedside, including a live version of Mariah’s song, “Fantasy” as the babies were coming out.  He also gave the new mom a ‘push present’ of earrings and had a framed imprint of the babies feet made for her.

4. Mariah and Nick slide 4

On a visit to The View, Nick was asked how he balanced the full-time job as chairman of Nickelodeon’s TeenNick channel, plus gigs as host of New York’s number 1 radio morning show and of America’s Got Talent: He responded by simply saying: “Taking care of Mariah is my number one job.” Aww.

5. Mariah and Nick slide 5

Mariah has refused to leave Nick’s side since his hospitalization for mild kidney failure in Aspen and after being transferred to Los Angeles this week. She tweeted fans, asking for their prayers. “Last year it was me attached to the machines (after having dembabies) and Nick was there with me through it, and now here we are. We're trying to be as festive as possible under the circumstances but please keep Nick in your thoughts because this is very painful. They tried to kick me out of the hospital but here I am pon de bed with Mr. C.”

6. Mariah and Nick slide 6

With Nick’s busy career, which often means working long hours Monday through Saturday, the couple has come up with a way to stay connected: They stay in bed all day on Sundays to watch DVR’d shows and cuddle, Nick said in a recent interview.
