Latina.com Exclusive: Daddy Yankee Explains Why He Supports John McCain

Retna Ltd.

Amigo de Obama? Not Daddy Yankee. The reggaetonero has confirmed that come election day, his vote will be for Republican candidate John McCain. Latina.com spoke exclusively to Daddy Yankee to understand why he decided to vote Republican this November while most celebrities seem downright fanatic about Democratic nominee Barack Obama.

The Puerto Rican native says the Senator made an impression on him the first time they met, at an event nearly two years ago: "I thought he was a really cool person, and this was way before he was even a presidential candidate, and I liked him a lot."

The unlikely partners reconnected last month when they were both in New York. "He invited me [to Washington] and I went," says Yankee. "We talked about boxing, we're both boxing fanatics."

It was McCain's down-to-earth nature that appealed to him the most. He explains, "the cool thing about McCain is that the same guy that was senator is the same guy who is running for president now. When I talked to him, I never felt beneath him, he looks directly at me when he’s speaking to me, and we have the same level of respect for each other."

But it was the stories McCain told him of his time on the battlefield that really struck a chord with the musician. "He said, 'Yankee, I was a soldier. And I saw people die next to me, Latinos who never got their citizenship but who were willing to die for this country. I saw a Hernandez, I saw a Rodriguez, how they killed them.' And that broke my heart hearing that. And I went, man, this guy lived it. He’s not just going, 'hey I want your vote.' He lived it."

Does it bother him that McCain doesn't speak a word of Spanish? "No, no. He has this great desire to help our people. People don't know this but since he was a senator, he has fought hard for the well-being of Latinos. I know we are dealing with someone who cares about the Latino community."

"I was surprised I have to say at how willing to listen he is," Yankee explains. "People who haven’t met him might get the wrong perception of him but he's totally different."

When we asked if he had plans to meet with Democratic candidate Barack Obama, Yankee responded with a curt, "No."

If Daddy Yankees influence within the Latino community is any indication, looks like John McCain's bid for the White House just got a major bump.

Tell us, does Daddy Yankee's endorsement of McCain affect your decision?

DY allowed himself to be a pawn. How could he? So man young latinos stateside could be influenced by this and yet DY didn't take the time to really research the issues prior to making this statement. The poor guy got starstruck. DY you got played! You're as silly as you look in the pic Latina has with this article.
I've been a huge Daddy Yankee fan for over 4 years, but I'm definitely an Obama supporter. I can't imagine what he's thinking supporting McCain. How can his vote go for McCain when Puerto Ricans can only vote in the primaries- not the general election??? Aren't these Hernandezes & Rodriguezes the same ones the Republicans are trying to keep out with the wall on the border? Not to mention Republicans are the ones pushing the "English Only" laws which clearly ignore Puerto Ricans who ARE citizens!
Coolness unfortunately should not be a qualifier for a Presidential candidate. It's unfortunate that this Boricua does not recognize that his very cool friend, McCain will continue to push the very economic policies that have distressed and depressed the economic face of Puerto Rico. But then again what does a superstar know about having a degree on the island and not being able to get a job or shopping at SuperWalmart and buying way too expensive groceries that were grown on the island shipped to the USA or elsewhere for "packaging" and back to PR at ridiculous prices. I guess you live up to your Yankee name! Disappointed is an understatement, especially since so many young faces look up to you. How about you go beyond the nice guy act McCain is selling you and get involved in the real issues. SEE THE DIFFERENCE.. OBAMA for LATINOS! OBAMA FOR CHANGE! SI SE PUEDE!
I'm sorry but that's not reason enough for me to vote for McCain. He's a republican and republicans don't care about Latino's, at least I've never seen them do anything for us. I still haven't heard McCain speak about how he is going to help us and help our current situation; the economy (cause believe it or not there has been a recession, Bush just doesn't want to admit it), jobs, education, the environment...So far everything he has said sounds just like Bush's policy. Bush destroyed this economy and McCain will continue that pattern. All they want to do is spend money we don't have...how about bringing in some money like Clinton and the Democrats. That's why we need a Democrat in office. We don't need anymore scare tactics! We need a better economy! Besides McCain can't relate to the struggles that Latino's and other minorities face...he's rich and he can only see his reality....All he knows is his reality. McCain may be the nicest man, but nice doesn't help me. I need someone in office that can relate to our everyday struggles and will fight for minorities and the middle-class. At least Obama knows about the middle-class society...Where as McCain does not! PLEASE! What does Daddy Yankee know?! Obama is just as nice, if not nicer...so then maybe he should vote for Obama. This really makes me second guess Daddy Yankees' intelligence. Just my opinion.
You say that George Bush and his puppet masters have done much to destroy the country and how the world views us. I would say many countries hold the USA in high standing. For example, the President of France has stated he would like to incorporate some of our government standards and procedures in his country. Rather than follow the "We hate America" posse, since you live in the US why not focus on the good America does for all people. Let's discuss George Bush. You hear a lot how he is not an eloquent speaker and that he put us in a war. Both are truths. It is also truth that the unemployment rate was at its lowest ever. In addition, interest rates have also been the lowest ever in the history of the US and the economy has been the strongest in 50 years. He has managed to stimulate a 28 year economy and avoid a recession to date. And finally, let's once again return our attention to Daddy Yankee. He is simply sharing his opinion. As I am, as you have. The editors of his commentary could have dumbed down the interview to appeal to the masses. I feel what Daddy Yankee was trying to convey was that Mr. McCain is a human being - Not the popular view that he is an unapproachable-good-for-nothing-doesn't-care-about-the-Latino-community-rich-white -man every other post in this board seems to think. More people should have more time to focus on important issues that affect not only our families, but our country and the world rather focus on the popularity and 15 minutes of fame for one performer.
no , he is just some young jit that was awestruck by a soldier poor kid ,go JOE-BAMA long live DEMOCRATES
Daddy Yankee, I am very proud of you for standing up for what you believe. I am also voting for McCain because I know he will be strong, good president of the USA. I firmly believe he will support the Latinos more than Obama would. Also with Sara as Vice President, I think she will be his right hand in making decisions that will be in the best interest of this country.
This is all very incredible. First of all, there are folks posting here that have A LOT of free time on their hands. I write in disbelief that anyone would want to vote for McCain - regardless of whether you are brown, black, white, brown , green or polka dotted. Forget about democrat or republican - its about the issues and the person. If you like what Bush has done to our wonderful country and what the world now thinks of us, then McCain will give us more of that. Lets stop the madness. Daddy Yankee should just shut up and go back to the studio and write another hit so his 15 minutes gets extended just a little bit longer. Who Daddy Yankee believes is a better man because he looks him in the eye and likes boxing (sounds more like a prison yard than the man who will run the biggest and best country in the world) is insane. Vote for Obama - the biggest reason to do this is that he is not McCain and he is not going to continue doing what Bush and his puppet masters have done to our country.
In response to Guayabita. You are the product of a single parent home. You have managed to educate yourself, despite the odds and difficulties, and as a 1st generation American you are an inspiration that the American dream is accessible. No where did anyone say it was easy. You say in the 80's you and your family faced discrimination due to language skills and shade of skin. I agree there is some truth to that. However, in this day and age, race lines are not always clearly defined. With regard to the ever increasing cost of an education and the struggle to make ends meet, especially under the Bush Administration, we cannot continue to blame our President for every woe, despite being a good target. One semester at a Community College is $1400, at a Senior College is $2000. Effective July 1 the interest rate for a Stafford Loan dropped from 6.8% to 6.0%. When you consider the average cc interest rate is in the ball park of 15%, funding an education via loans is not impossible. Imagine how much harder it was in the 70's when under the Carter Administration the interest rate for a student loan was 15-20%. Our generation is very lucky to have so many opportunities available to us, when at one point it was not. The problem herein lies is our generation is limited by the way things were for our parents. It is not the case now. We put our own limitations on ourselves. I agree you cannot have a home with a white picket fence in NYC. My father-in-law who has been in this country for 33 years just taught himself how to read in English 10 years ago, soon there after, this man, who for all intents and purposes was treated like a second class citizen in the 70's, not only ran a success business in an neighborhood that did not like Hispanics (circa the time of Yusef Hawkins) for 15 years, he taught himself calculus for fun, bought a home and is a very happy 52 year old man. Was it hard, absolutely. He surprised people at our wedding 3 years because he was finally comfortable to speak English in front of an audience. My mother-law, an office manager, is now going to back to school at 50 to fulfill her American dream. You say the Republican party is out of touch with the plight of the Latino community. I must point out some interesting Democratic leaders: Robert Byrd, known member of the KKK and the late Bull Connor, Democratic KKK member, he endorsed segregation and took to using a fire hose to get his point across. Not only were they against minorities, also put limitations on women. That goodness for a republican named Lyndon B. Johnson. If not for him and his enactment of the Civil Rights Act we would certainly not be here on this forum debating. I wish you well in your education and future. Again, the issue here is not really who is better, a Democrat or a Republican. I have read so much about who does what for the Latino community. The true question is what are WE DOING FOR THE LATINO COMMUNITY. We can point fingers, live up to the stereotypes but at the end of the day we determine our destiny. WE have to power to elect a leader, we have the power to become leaders ourselves, we have the power to accept our role in the current state of America. Please vote, be the voice, be heard. This has been a great forum to discuss the state of our country. Too bad it had to come under the "news" that Daddy Yankee was endorsing McCain. Our generation should stop putting so much stock in the opinions of celebrities and form our own prospectives.
Daddy Yankee is an idiot for endorsing McCain this man doesn't give a darn about the hispanic community just like the bush admin doesn't. These people look for the hispanic vote to get votes that's it. He has forgotten that not everyone is on his income level there are many of us who are struggling to get by and for him to endorse someone like mccain is like a slap in the face. Get a clue! Let's see how he feels when his fans tell him where to go
