Latina.com Exclusive: Daddy Yankee Explains Why He Supports John McCain

Retna Ltd.

Amigo de Obama? Not Daddy Yankee. The reggaetonero has confirmed that come election day, his vote will be for Republican candidate John McCain. Latina.com spoke exclusively to Daddy Yankee to understand why he decided to vote Republican this November while most celebrities seem downright fanatic about Democratic nominee Barack Obama.

The Puerto Rican native says the Senator made an impression on him the first time they met, at an event nearly two years ago: "I thought he was a really cool person, and this was way before he was even a presidential candidate, and I liked him a lot."

The unlikely partners reconnected last month when they were both in New York. "He invited me [to Washington] and I went," says Yankee. "We talked about boxing, we're both boxing fanatics."

It was McCain's down-to-earth nature that appealed to him the most. He explains, "the cool thing about McCain is that the same guy that was senator is the same guy who is running for president now. When I talked to him, I never felt beneath him, he looks directly at me when he’s speaking to me, and we have the same level of respect for each other."

But it was the stories McCain told him of his time on the battlefield that really struck a chord with the musician. "He said, 'Yankee, I was a soldier. And I saw people die next to me, Latinos who never got their citizenship but who were willing to die for this country. I saw a Hernandez, I saw a Rodriguez, how they killed them.' And that broke my heart hearing that. And I went, man, this guy lived it. He’s not just going, 'hey I want your vote.' He lived it."

Does it bother him that McCain doesn't speak a word of Spanish? "No, no. He has this great desire to help our people. People don't know this but since he was a senator, he has fought hard for the well-being of Latinos. I know we are dealing with someone who cares about the Latino community."

"I was surprised I have to say at how willing to listen he is," Yankee explains. "People who haven’t met him might get the wrong perception of him but he's totally different."

When we asked if he had plans to meet with Democratic candidate Barack Obama, Yankee responded with a curt, "No."

If Daddy Yankees influence within the Latino community is any indication, looks like John McCain's bid for the White House just got a major bump.

Tell us, does Daddy Yankee's endorsement of McCain affect your decision?

This is why I I dont say what I am because regardless someone is going to disagree some way or some how. I like both of them did i vote yes. If i could have voted i would have... My dad was in the vietnam So I do respect those who fight,. But i am against it,but i can say one thing 4sure it is gonna happen. But i also enjoy having a bi-racial president who has a very open mind about things which is what our country needs...

I agree with both amoreno236 and caramel_swagga. And hey it's done and over with----Obama is our President and we as a country need to do our part as he has expressed in many ways. "......We need to work with our hearts....."
John McCain is an Honorable man and has EARNED respect from the American people. I had intended to vote for McCain but when he selected Sarah Palin, I immediately went out and volunteered and contibuted money for Obama. McCain, would have cut out all the PORK in this SPENDING Bill Obama pushed through the houses. Do you all think our tax dollars should go to study swine, honey bees, salmon, the arts, and provide the government with 600 million to purchase cars, etc.? People are living in tents!!! We are in the same depression as we had in 1929. Wake up America! Thanks for letting me have my say, TD:)
are u a guy???
Oye Yankee, no seas siego papa! Mira por encaso si tu no has visto, los republicanos son los que mas esplotan a la gente. Por decir, yo entiendo por que tu votas por ellos. Aunque la eleccion sea terminado, deves de tener Verguensa que escupiste un chiste como este! Mejor canta y no oppines!
My sister agrees with you and thinks you are funny too. Good way to explain yourself though.
i respect his decision to support mccain but i supported obama the election was suppose to be about the issues the economy the war in iraq education funding etc.. but the main priority of mccain was bringing up the past of obama and slandering his name as opposed to debating the issues and how or if he would be better and seeing through these issues if he were elected president i just think obama did an excellent job staying on the issues and showing and persuading america why he would be better equipped for being the president and it didnt help mccain that he had an idiot PALIN running for vice president come on now i wouldnt trust or leave a pet in her care less known being the vice president of this country the media made this whole election about race which anybody could see one candidate was biracial and the other white and on a daily basis people were saying the only reason obama won was because all the black people voted for him when that cant be true because its a proven fact that more white people were registered to vote then black and latino voters so even if the majority of blacks were to vote for him he still wouldnt have won unless whites asians latinos etc.. gave him their vote to i didnt support him because hes a monority i supported him because i was impressed with the issues he was concerned about and wanted to change
am writing in for two reasons first of all sexy_jaz claims to be a boricua...get educated. Puerto Rico is run by the Federal Government therefore they DO VOTE in presedential elections...Hence Hillary Clinton's visit to Puerto Rico to campaign. I belive Latina should have caught this error and corrected it..since they didn't I figure I would. I do however agree with you that Daddy Yankee is being one sided...Is he being paid by McCain??????' azucar_ dd, October 29, 2008 - 7:03pm
