A picture may be worth a thousand words, but for Eva Longoria it also unlocks an art of storytelling that crosses creative boundaries. The Mexican actress has formed part of Canon's "Project Imaginat10n," a campaign run by director Ron Howard, which invites photographers of all levels to submit their work and inspire ten short films. Some of the shorts will by directed by celebrities including Eva, Jamie Foxx, Biz Stone, and more.
We chatted exclusively with the Desperate Housewives star about her new project, the ALMA Awards, her DNC speech, and more!
We are so excited about the "Project Imaginat10n"! People get to inspire your next short film with their photography. What drew you to this project?
"I love the creativity and the idea of bringing people together. You never know when you are going to be inspired. I find it so refreshing because sometimes I find it hard to come up with stories and content. To be guided by these photos submitted by people all over the world is interesting and new."
The contest includes ten storytelling themes including relationships, goals, and struggles. Which theme are you inspired by?
"Oh gosh! I honestly can’t pick one. I will be inspired when I see the photos. I’m looking forward to seeing how I interpret those images. It might be love or struggle. I don’t know yet, and that’s exactly the beauty of this campaign. You can’t come in with preconceived notions in your head because the pictures will lead you where you want to go."
Ron Howard said in a promo video that you are a powerful force in the business and media mogul. How does it feel to hear that?
"I’m humbled! I’m such a big admirer of his work. He’s the main reason I joined the project. He serves as a mentor and to work with one of the greatest directors of all time is just such an honor. I have such respect for him."
Since wrapping Desperate Housewives you have developed your power behind the camera with producing Ready for Love and Devious Maids. Do you have a preference over acting or producing?
"I love them both! Right now I’m focused more on producing and directing, so I’ve just been learning and enjoying it so much. I have been in front of the camera for 14 years so it’s nice having a little more control behind the camera."
We can't wait to watch you at the ALMA Awards tonight! What was your most memorable moment this year?
"One of my favorite moments was when we honored all of the winning American Latino Olympians. They are living the American dream and that’s what we love to celebrate. The ALMA Awards is such an important evening for our community and I just love being a part of it every year."
You have eleven wardrobe changes throughout the evening. How do you select your looks?
"We make it a point to showcase Latino designers like Carolina Herrera and Robert Rodriguez. Of course, the other factor is that the gowns have to be beautiful! The stylists definitely do a great job at it."
Your DNC speech was so inspiring. What do you hope young Latinos learn from it?
"That we are trying to build an America where it’s possible for you to succeed and everyone gets a fair shot. That’s why I wanted to my story because most people will look at me and think that my life was always glamorous, but I worked 5 jobs and went to college. I struggled, but I had help with grants and insurance. These are policies that affect our communities so I wanted everyone to know that the right person to move this country forward is President Obama."
How did it feel to reflect back on your own story of success?
"I’m humbled by it because I never expected I would be where I am. At the same time, I worked hard for it. I'm enjoying every minute of it."
