Javier Bardem took home the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival for his work in Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu's film Biutiful on Sunday—but despite the accomplishment, that wasn't what everyone was talking about.
While accepting his award at the ceremony, Bardem shocked the crowd by declaring his love for longtime girlfriend Penelope Cruz, saying, “To my girlfriend, my companion, my love: Penelope. I owe you much and I love you a lot.” It was the first time that the couple has ever publically acknowledged their relationship. Cruz seemed as surprised as everyone else in the audience at the outburst of affection, getting visibly emotional and holding back tears. She was comforted by Bardem's mother, Pilar, who pulled her in close for a hug.
Cruz and Bardem have always been super-private about their love. They've been dating for years, yet refuse to acknowledge rumors surrounding an engagement or impending wedding, though Cruz has been photographed rocking a huge gemstone on that ever-important left ring finger on more than one occasion.
