Salma Hayek, John Leguizamo Win Big at ALMA Awards

Dozens of Latinos working in the media industry were honored at the 2009 ALMA Awards, filmed last night in Los Angeles. Among the biggest winners of the evening were Salma Hayek and John Leguizamo.

Salma nabbed the top honors of the evening, taking home the Anthony Quinn award for Industry Excellence. But John Leguizamo also won for his role in Nothing Like the Holidays, the hysterical (and underrated in our opinion) Christmas comedy he starred in last year alongside Debra Messing and an ensemble cast of almost entirely Latino actors. Screenwriter Rick Najera and director Alfredo De Villa also took home trophies for their work on the film.

Other honorees included Hayek's best friend, Penélope Cruz, who scooped up yet another accolade for her impeccable performance as Maria Elena in Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona. Disney sweetheart Selena Gomez was also recognized for her work on Wizards of Waverly place and took home an award for best comedy actress on TV.

The ALMA awards, hosted by Eva Longoria Parker and George Lopez will air tonight at 8PM on ABC.

FYI :D David Archuleta has been submitted for “Best New Artist” Contender at the Grammy’s Grammys submissions for it’s 52nd annual event have been leaked and David appears to be on the Best New Artist, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Short Form Music Video. Nominations for the 2010 Grammys will be announced on December 2, 2009. The event is to take place Jan. 31 at the Staples Center. It is to air live on the CBS Television Network.

As a latina myself, I was so proud to see my heritage succeed in so many categories. I was particularly proud of David Archuleta's performance of Contigo en la Distancia! What a future he has awaiting for him and I'll be there all the way! I can't wait to get his Christmas album which will have a Spanish song!

kudos to all the recipients of 2009 alma awards! ... it was a great honor for all those of latin heritage to receive recognition for all the contributions made in the entertainment industry, and others, that tend to be overlooked. i was also glad to see david archuleta singing on the broadcast. his ''contigo en la distancia'' is one of the most stunning live vocal performances seen on television in ages. it was your wonderful show that showed his vocal skill and brilliance to perfection - he was mesmerizing to watch, and the buzz from that performance, worldwide, is still burning hot. he was well deserving of the ''male rising star'' award, and next year's recipient, or any musical performer, will be hard pressed to top this live, un-lipsynched performance on next year's show. the fans are hoping to see him for many years to come on this program - presenting, performing, and receiving more awards.

I'd like to congratulate all the ALMA award recipients for a job well done and pay a special tribute to David Archuleta, recipient of the ALMA Year in Music/Rising Male Star award, for his outstanding performance of Contigo en la Distancia that evening. He blew me away that night! I knew that David would have a shining career when I first saw him sing "Heaven" on Season 7 of American Idol. I've followed his career since that moment and he never ceases to amaze me with his hard work and dedication to his craft. It's the first time I've gotten a glimpse of what goes into building a name for yourself in the entertainment industry, and believe me, it's nothing short of a miracle when and if you make your mark. Lucky for us that David is young and will be around for years entertaining us with his beautiful voice, not to mention his amazing song writing. It is comforting to know that a young man who is known for "keeping it real" is being recognized for his tremendous talent. SHINE ON DAVID!

Hi. Along with the other comments, I'd like to say that I really enjoyed watching David Archuleta's performance on the Alma Awards. And I'm very, very proud that he received an award for Male Rising Star/Year in Music. I've been following David since he won Junior Star Search as a young boy, and he's a force to be reckoned with. I also enjoyed seeing Selena Gomez; she is a cutie. And Oscar de la Hoya--wow, I didn't realize that he was involved in so many activities outside of boxing. Good for him! So much talent was represented that night. Very neat.
