Ricky Martin appeared on Ellen to promote his FX show The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, but you know he couldn’t leave without talking about his beloved island.
During the holidays, the Livin' La Vida Loca singer and his family were in Puerto Rico, which according to the singer, 53 percent of the island is still without power. But, the Puerto Rican star was quick to add in an upbeat tone, “We are smiling and we’re happy and we’re alive. And we’re very grateful…for the love we’ve been receiving from all over the world.”
Instead of complaining to Ellen DeGeneres about the lack of power and water —which means so many kids are still unable to attend school—Martin is determined to stay "optimistic" and know that things are going to change.
When the host asked if anyone was coming in to help restore the power, the Grammy-Award winning artist explained that the process is complicated.
Apparently, 7,000 poles are needed for the island to regain power and the company that’s currently responsible for installing the poles (the previous one went bankrupt) can only do one to two per week. So everything is in slow motion.
To date, the 46-year-old has helped to raise almost five million dollars for Puerto Rico’s hurricane relief efforts.
