Normani Kordei is opening up about the racism she has experienced while in the limelight.
Before her May 8 performance on Dancing With the Stars, which itself was informed by race and blackness, the Fifth Harmony singer talked about being called racial slurs during one of the show’s confessional videos.
"People were calling me the N word," she said. "It was really ugly."
The 20-year-old noted that she felt "helpless and desperate," especially after Photoshopped images of her being "whipped, beaten and hung" began circulating.
"I shouldn't want to change the color of my skin or texture of my hair or the fact that I'm a woman," Kordei said.
The star, and her pro partner Val Chmerkovskiy, received a perfect score for their contemporary dance piece, which was set to Anthony Hamilton and Elayna Boynton's "Freedom." Watch a clip from the episode below.
