NBA Player Gilbert Arenas Pulls Gun on Teammate, Claims It Was a "Joke"

Continuing the grand tradition recently revived by Tiger Woods of athletes acting a fool, NBA player Gilbert Arenas is in hot water after allegedly pulling a gun on his teammate. The part Cuban point guard for the Washington Wizards has claimed that he brought four unloaded guns into Verizon center (the D.C. area arena where the Wizards play) to keep them out of his house and away from his children.

In a statement he released on Monday after meeting with local law enforcement officials for two hours, Arenas states that he believed it was legal to store unloaded guns in his locker room due to a recent change in D.C. law. In a recent interview, Arenas said he pulled the unloaded gun on Javaris Crittenton on Dec. 21 "in a misguided effort to play a joke on a teammate."

"Joke or not, I now recognize that what I did was a mistake and was wrong," Arenas continued. "I should not have brought the guns to DC in the first place, and I now realize that there's no such thing as joking around when it comes to guns — even if unloaded."

We think that athletes need to stop lying about the reasons they purchase, brandish and shoot themselves with guns and just admit that they do it for street cred and to earn tough guy points and not for "protection" as they always claim. Then, when they do things so insanely stupid like this, we can all stop pretending to be shocked.

What do you think about Arenas's gun incident? Do you think he should go to jail?
