Lauren Jauregui Stands Up For the LGBTQ+ Community Once Again

It all started with a twitter thread asking what would happen if “your son comes out as gay?” The responses ranged from “I’ll kill him” to “you stay normal or you leave my house.” A young twitter user then responded by saying “this is why we (LGBTQ+) commit suicide.”

The young man’s response caught Lauren Jauregui's attention wherein she responded in solidarity by tweeting, “this is such a disgusting display of toxic masculinity & a deep ignorance of the expression of human sexuality. It is a spectrum that has no shame…Anyone who can wish this on something they created is deeply troubled.”

The Fifth Harmony’s love was met with more love as Twitter users began to respond to the young man's suicide tweet with kindness, openness, and their own vulnerabilities. “I wouldn’t even care, it wouldn’t make a difference what his sexual preference is. I’d love him regardless as long as he’s a good person he could love whoever he wants,” one Twitter user responded.

Another Twitter user tweeted that she was “scared” to come out as bisexual to her family after seeing the thread of threats towards the LGBTQ+ community. The Cuban-American singer tweeted back saying, “Do not be terrified. Your truth is not shameful, and anyone who shames you for living your truth only does it because they are ashamed of who they are.”

Do not be terrified. Your truth is not shameful, and anyone who shames you for living your truth only does it because they are ashamed of who they are.

This is not the first time that the brunette beauty has stood with the LGBTQ+ community in their stance against ignorance and hatred. In 2016 the Latina penned a letter to the Trump administration via Billboard wherein she wrote, “You voted for a person who built an 18-month campaign off the back of your hatred. He manipulated ALL of you with such ease by speaking to the darker parts of you that had started to feel ashamed about the way you viewed the "politically correct" world. He became your champion, because he spoke to the parts of you that think you are superior to the rest of us.”

Jauregui then showcased her bravery by coming out, stating “I am a bisexual Cuban-American woman and I am so proud of it. I am proud to be part of a community that only projects love and education and the support of one another.” She also added, “I am proud to feel the whole spectrum of my feelings and I will gladly take the label of "bitch" and "problematic" for speaking my mind…But, I will also extend the fullest hand of compassion and empathy for anyone labeling me as such.”

When another Twitter user tweeted to the star that “stupid is a condition. Ignorance is a choice,” The former X Factor contestant indeed responded with compassion and empathy. She replied by saying, “To an extent. Some people aren’t ever exposed to other opinions and are raised and abused their whole lives by toxic people. We must bring light to ignorance, not cast them further into their shadow selves.”

Jauregui’s words are helping foster resilience against hatred and bigotry. As she said to one Twitter user, “I hope you’ve found people who love you for exactly who you are, because you are perfectly you.”

The 21-year-old continues to use her platform to encourage others to be kind to themselves, love one another, and to continue shining their unique light onto this world that can sometimes be filled with such darkness. Keep shining Lauren!
